Writing A Blog Post That Ranks - A Beginner Guide

I'm not joking, there are over 1 billion blog on internet right now and ranking a blog post among such competition on a high searched keyword is no child's play.

But if you are passionate and want to rank on Google, then this post if for you, as I am going to tell you how to write a blog post that ranks on Google in 2019.

So it will be a step by step guide, and I will not discuss the topics in detail that are usually discussed.

Choosing the Right Keywords

This does not need any introduction, as you know how keywords are important. If you do not, read this post. In short, I would say that choose keywords that have high search volume but low competition. Also, the keywords should have commercial user intent i.e. the people searching those keywords should have the intent to pay for a product or service.

For example, instead of using the keyword "best free tools", use "best premium tools" so that you can use affiliate links in the blog post and if the person buy something using the affiliate link, you will earn a commission.

Now when you decide the right keywords to target at, move to the next step.

Keyword Placing

You may have to told by someone to include your target keyword as many times as you can in your blog post. But this is not what you have to do. I would recommend that start the title of your blog post with your targeted keyword and add the keyword within the first or second paragraph of the post.

Also, you have to use a smart trick. Search for your targeted keyword on Google and scroll down on and note down the Related Searches, which are the keywords related to your targeted keyword.

Use these keywords many times in your blog post, as it will definitely help in ranking your blog post on your targeted keyword. This trick is recommended by professional bloggers, including Neil Patel and Brian Dean.

Meta Description

This is the description of your blog post that you give to search engines. This helps search engines to know what is your blog post about, and which keywords to rank your blog post on.

You should keep the meta description of your blog posts short, maximum 15 to 20 words. Also, you should include your main targeted keyword in the meta description.

This is very crucial in ranking a blog post, and you must use it if you don't. Now let's move on to the next step.

Permalink

You must have SEO friendly URLs in your blog posts. You should only keep your targeted keyword in your permalink, so that search engines like it.

For example, compare the following URLs:

1. yourdomain.com/2012/08/keyword_44789/
2. your domain.com/keyword-what-if-no-india/
3. your domain.com/keyword/

The best URL among the following is the third one, because it is short and includes the targeted keyword.

Write Long Content

This is very important to rank a blog post. Long content does not mean that you write useless and boring content. You should write longer blog posts which describe the topic in detail, as it will generate a sense of originality towards your blog among search engines and also, it will be liked by your blog visitors as they will be able to get detailed information.

In such huge competition, a long and detailed blog post is recommended to be at least around 1000-2000 words. But I would give you a smart tip that you can follow. Search your targeted keyword on Google and analyze the word limit of the top 10 search results. Then write a blog post longer than any of the blog posts appearing on the search results on your targeted keyword. For example, if the search results on your targeted keyword have around 500-1500 words, then you should write a blog post of around 2000 words.

This will give your blog post a plus point against your competitors and will help in ranking your blog post on your targeted keyword. Let's move to our next step.

Image SEO

Images are an important component of blog posts.So the images also have to be optimized for SEO. Image SEO is not very complex, you just have to consider a number of points.

You have to name the files of images you use in your blog posts and include your targeted keyword in at least one of the images. For example, if you download an image from a website or even Google images, the image file name is something like this : download (23), and if you edit an image using any app or software, say PicsArt, the image file name will be like : picsart_478.

So, in order to tell seach engines about your image and to make your blog  and blog posts look more professional in the eyes of both search engines and blog visitors, you should definitely name the image files that you use on your blog.

Also, you should use compressed images on your blog posts, as it indirectly helps in the SEO of your blog. Compressed images reduce the size of the blog posts and hence, increase the loading speed of the blog posts.

Loading speed is a very important ranking factor and hence, blog posts of lesser size are preferred over heavy and bulky blog posts by search engines. So it is always recommended to compress images before using them on your blog posts.

You can compress the images by using any image compresser available online. The quality of the images is not much affected their compression. You can compress images of several MBs into as low as 20 KB.

Adding Videos

Adding videos in your blog posts gives you an advantage over your competitors, who do not add videos in their blog posts. It is not necessary that you need to add your own videos, rather you can also embed videos from YouTube.

Adding videos has another advantage i.e. adding appropriate videos in appropriate places in blog posts improves the user experience of your blog visitors.

If your blog visitors watch the videos that you added, then the average time spent by a visitor on your blog post will increase, which will really help a lot in that blog post's ranking.
